movies...not the Forum...not a big Lakers fan. That seemed so funny while I was typing it, but after I looked at it, I'm not so sure...anyway...back to the movies.
I went to see The Grudge tonight. I don't like scary movies, by the way. Because...uhm...THEY SCARE ME! I mean, hello, yes, there are still those of us out here that see some things up on the big screen that freak us out. I know there's many out there that have become so used to seeing it that it's a joke now, but I'm not one of them...so when I see a creepy, bloody THING creeping down the stairs...when it's up in front of me five times larger than life...in the DARK...I scream. Loudly. Yes, I know it's not real...but how many of you out there get a little nervous after the second time you say "Candyman" into a mirror? Be honest. And when the phone rings late at night and you're home alone...am I the only person that wonders if I might hear a menacing, whispery voice on the line? Am I really? The only person? Nah...I don't think so. Be honest.
There's a phrase that I've always liked...suspension of disbelief.
So when I go to the movies, or watch one at home, or just something on TV...I do just that - suspend my disbelief. Sure, like I said...I know it's not real. But for that time, I can pretend that the sneaky running play really does win the game, that the Man of Steel really can fly, and sure, why not, that the "really normal guy" next door has a Blake painting tattooed on his back and really needs braces. I know that the chances of a plane crashing on the only island for five hundred miles in any direction are slim to none ...but what the heck, isn't that what entertainment 's really all about, believing that all things are possible, if only for a liitle while...putting aside the scoffing, disbelieving person you might have grown up to be and returning to the child you once were?
I think so.
