Lost Update

Finally we get to know a little more about the Asian couple!  After inexplicably attacking Michael, Jin is handcuffed to a piece of wreckage (I was happy to see that Sawyer came running out to help Sayid...Sawyer may turn out to be a good guy after all, and those dimples...).  The apparent language barrier prevents anyone from finding out why the attack occured.  Through a series of flashbacks, we see that Jin and Sun started out as young, starcrossed lovers, with he a waiter, and she the daughter of a seemingly powerful man.  In order for them to marry, Jin takes a job with Sun's father.  We see them become a wealthy couple, but when Jin comes home from "work" covered in blood, Sun begins to wonder if she can stay with him.  She takes steps (English lessons, and contact with someone to help her get out of the country) to leave him, but when the moment arises for her to leave, she cannot, and joins Jin in line at the airport.  Sun seeks out Michael and startles us all by asking for his help...in English!

A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To the...

movies...not the Forum...not a big Lakers fan. That seemed so funny while I was typing it, but after I looked at it, I'm not so sure...anyway...back to the movies.

I went to see The Grudge tonight. I don't like scary movies, by the way. Because...uhm...THEY SCARE ME! I mean, hello, yes, there are still those of us out here that see some things up on the big screen that freak us out. I know there's many out there that have become so used to seeing it that it's a joke now, but I'm not one of them...so when I see a creepy, bloody THING creeping down the stairs...when it's up in front of me five times larger than life...in the DARK...I scream. Loudly. Yes, I know it's not real...but how many of you out there get a little nervous after the second time you say "Candyman" into a mirror? Be honest. And when the phone rings late at night and you're home alone...am I the only person that wonders if I might hear a menacing, whispery voice on the line? Am I really? The only person? Nah...I don't think so. Be honest.

There's a phrase that I've always liked...suspension of disbelief.

So when I go to the movies, or watch one at home, or just something on TV...I do just that - suspend my disbelief. Sure, like I said...I know it's not real. But for that time, I can pretend that the sneaky running play really does win the game, that the Man of Steel really can fly, and sure, why not, that the "really normal guy" next door has a Blake painting tattooed on his back and really needs braces. I know that the chances of a plane crashing on the only island for five hundred miles in any direction are slim to none ...but what the heck, isn't that what entertainment 's really all about, believing that all things are possible, if only for a liitle while...putting aside the scoffing, disbelieving person you might have grown up to be and returning to the child you once were?

I think so.

Random Thoughts

1. Ever wonder about those people who spend $2.00 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backwards: NAIVE

2. Isn't making a smoking section in a restaurant like making a peeing section in a swimming pool?

3. OK.... so if the Jacksonville Jaguars are known as the "Jags" and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are known as the "Bucs," what does that make the Tennessee Titans?

4. If 4 out of 5 people SUFFER from diarrhea...does that mean that one enjoys it?

5. There are three religious truths:
a. Jews do not recognize Jesus as the Messiah.
b. Protestants do not recognize the Pope as the leader of the Christian faith.
c. Baptists do not recognize each other in the liquor store or at Hooters.

6. If people from Poland are called Poles, why aren't people from
Holland called Holes?

7 Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery?

8.. If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled?

9. Why do croutons come in airtight packages? Aren't they just stale bread to begin with?

10. Why is a person who plays the piano called a pianist but a person who drives a racecar is not called a racist?

11. Why isn't the number 11 pronounced onety one?

12. If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn't it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked, and dry cleaners depressed?

13. If Fed Ex and UPS were to merge, would they call it Fed UP?

14. Do Lipton Tea employees take coffee breaks?

15. What hair color do they put on the driver's licenses of bald men?

16. I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older; then it dawned on me ...they're cramming for their final exam.

17. I thought about how mothers feed their babies with tiny little spoons and forks , so I wondered what do Chinese mothers use? toothpicks?

18. Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post Office? What are we supposed to do, write to them? Why don't they just put their pictures on the postage stamps so the mailmen can look for them while they deliver the mail?

19. If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for?

20. You never really learn to swear until you learn to drive.

Where's the body?!?

OK, "Lost" was great again last night...aside from the fact that I got to see Jack with his shirt off. :) Unfortunately one of the crash survivors died in the ocean, which made Jack, in addition to his lack of sleep, a little crazy. But he saved Boone, who also felt guilty for not being able to save the girl...and we got some insight into Jack's life before the crash...controlling parents, a dad with a drinking problem, and a mom that seems to blame Jack for something..."not after what you did..." Ominous...so Jack goes crashing through the jungle chasing hallucination...or is it? He catches up and discovers that it is his father...could he have been on the plane? Jack almost tumbles off a cliff, but is saved by Locke, who is out on a hunt for fresh water...the two men sit down, with Locke giving Jack some advice on how to deal with what he is seeing, and telling Jack that even though Jack says what he's seeing is impossible, Locke himselfe is not so sure...Locke also mentions that he believes the island is magic, and makes reference to seeing the "monster," but he seems to not be afraid of what he saw, but in awe of it...so Locke goes on with his search, insisting that Jack keep following his vision, because a leader "needs to know where he is going." He finally ends up where the tail section of the plane ended up...and there's a coffin...in flashbacks we see that Jack's father died, and the coffin is his father's...Jack wrestles with the coffin...opens it...and it's EMPTY!! So he beats it to pieces with a pipe, returns to the beach, and finally begins to be the leader that they need...But who was he following through the jungle?!?

On another note, has anyone seen the comparisons by I think one of the writers and by others on the net between "Lost" and "The Stand" by Stephen King? Comments?

Jon Stewart Tells It Like It Is

Jon Stewart of the Daily Show made a recent appearance on Crossfire, which is something like the Jerry Springer show for partisan politics. The San Francisco Chronicle covers the incident here, but what it came down to is that Jon lashed out at the show and it's hosts for "hurting America" by not being an unbiased news source. My favorite exchange between Stewart and Crossfire's Tucker Carlson went like this (taken from Reuters article):

"..."You have a responsibility to the public discourse, and you fail miserably," Stewart said.

"Crossfire" co-host Tucker Carlson hit back by citing the comedian's own interview with Sen. John Kerry a couple of weeks ago. Carlson suggested Stewart shouldn't lecture them when he lobs softballs.

"You're on CNN. The show that leads into me is puppets making crank phone calls," Stewart replied..."

And while Carlson fired back to the Philidelphia Inquirer that "I just thought he was lame and out of his depth. Completely banal. He didn't tell me anything I haven't heard from drunk people in airport bars," probably in reference to the fact that Stewart called him a dick on national television, I still feel that Stewart was absolutely correct when he criticized Crossfire's biased reporting.  And besides, Tucker Carlson wears a bow tie...to me if your over 7 or under 80, bow ties are verboten!  Chime in...see the video on the Crossfire link above and let me know what you think!

Love of Silly Movies

"Top Secret!" was on last night.  This is a movie in the "Airplane!" genre (indicated by the exclamation point, I suppose) which was also on last night.  If you've never seen these movies, you're missing out.  If you want a chance to just laugh at silly sight gags, puns, and low humor, these would be the ones to watch.  Not to mention that "Top Secret!" stars a young Val Kilmer doing a fair imitation of Elvis throughout. :)  "It's OK, stewerdess, I speak jive," "Of course, I'm serious...and don't call me Shirley," and "I know a little German. He's sitting over there" never fail to crack me up...If you've seen either or both of these, let me know what your favorite lines are so I can laugh some more...

My last official act...DOH!

Well, maybe not my last official act, but it's a lulu of a mistake all the same...I had put together a build plan for this clock (it's not really a clock, but close enough without getting into a technical description), and ordered these oscillators based on that plan...well guess what? Wrong oscillator...if that weren't bad enough, these cost about $2K apiece...so I've ordered about $12K of the WRONG part!! This is not a good thing...but I am now working on various plans to use them, none of which are going to get them out of inventory anytime soon! Further updates as events warrant...

I'm baaack...

Wow, it feels like I've been gone forever...but really only since Friday...I actually took two days off...this may not seem like much, but those that have been reading awhile will remember that I've been working hard since someone quit and I was asked to fill in until they found a replacement.  That's been done...but...I also got a promotion!  :)  Don't ever let anyone tell you that hard work doesn't pay...well, it pays a little bit anyway.   I'm now a production planner for my company...this coming week is my transition week (ie cleaning out and moving my cube stuff to another one across the building...I'm really excited because there is a lot more room for growth in this new department, and it is something that I feel I can do well...so cross your fingers and wish me luck!!
